How does Missouri’s point system work?

If you accumulate a total of 4 points in 12 months, the Department of Revenue will send you a point accumulation advisory letter.

If you accumulate a total of 8 or more points in 18 months, the Department of Revenue will suspend your driving privilege.

The Department of Revenue will revoke your driving privilege for one year if you accumulate:

When your driving privilege is reinstated following a Point Suspension or Revocation, the Department of Revenue reduces your total points to 4.

Every year you drive without getting new points on your record, the points will be reduced.

Although your points may be reduced to zero, certain types of convictions must remain listed permanently on your Missouri driver record.

Why is my driving privilege suspended, revoked, or denied?

There are a number of reasons why your driver license may be suspended, revoked, or denied. You can find out why you are suspended, revoked, or denied from the letter(s) you received or by contacting our office.

Can I check my driver record?

Call 573-526-2407 to find out about non-personal information such as traffic tickets and suspension/revocation-related information. You may also get a copy of your driver record (see Driver Records).

How can I get my driving privilege reinstated?

Your specific reinstatement requirements are based on the type of suspension, revocation, or denial action(s) on your driver record. For more information, visit the License Reinstatement Requirements page of our website.

You can also contact our staff by email to find out our your reinstatement requirements.

Am I eligible for a Restricted Driving Privilege (RDP)?

The Department only issues Restricted Driving Privileges (RDP) for first-time alcohol point suspensions. For information about the RDP, visit the Restricted Driving Privilege (RDP) page of our website

Am I eligible for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP)?

If you cannot get your driver license back, but you need to drive for employment or other important matters, you may apply for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP). You may get an LDP unless you have certain convictions or losses of license on your driver record. Some convictions or loss of license are so serious that an LDP may not be granted. Visit the Limited Driving Privilege (LDP) page of our website for reasons why you may not be eligible for an LDP.

NOTE: A person cannot obtain an LDP to drive a commercial motor vehicle.

Where and how do I apply for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP)?

For information about the Limited Driving Privilege (LDP), visit the Limited Driving Privilege (LDP) page of our website.

Where do I appeal the suspension, revocation, or denial of my driver license?

You may appeal a driver license suspension, revocation, or denial in the circuit court of the county where you live within 30 days after the notice of suspension, revocation, or denial is issued.

Do I have to test after I am reinstated?

You are required to retest upon reinstatement for a point revocation or upon reinstatement for a point suspension or denial if your driver license expired during the suspension, revocation, or denial period and has been expired for more than six months.

How can I drive when under suspension, revocation, or denial?

You cannot drive while your driver license is suspended, revoked, or denied unless you apply for and receive a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP). For more information, visit the Limited Driving Privilege (LDP) page of our website.

How do I pay my reinstatement fee?

You must submit the reinstatement fee to the Missouri Department of Revenue (Department) central office by one of the following methods:

You cannot pay your reinstatement fee at a license office.

NOTE: The vendor that provides the service for processing debit card and credit card transactions charges a convenience fee in addition to and separate from the reinstatement fee charged by the Missouri Department of Revenue. Although the reinstatement fee and the vendor's convenience fee are separate, you will only see one fee charged to your debit card or credit card account.

A convenience fee of 2.0% + $0.25 per card transaction will be charged.

What is an SR-22 insurance filing?

An SR-22 form is an insurance filing from your insurance company that shows your motor vehicle has liability insurance.

How long do I need the SR-22 insurance filing?

You must file the SR-22 form for two years from the effective date of your Point suspension, revocation, or denial.

I have an alcohol offense. Do I need an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) to reinstate my driving privilege?

If your driver record shows more than one alcohol- or drug-related enforcement contact, you are required to have an IID installed on any vehicle you operate. You must maintain the device for a minimum period of six months from the reinstatement date. You will be monitored during the last three months of the six-month period. If you have any violations, as determined by the device manufacturer during the monitoring period, your requirement to maintain the device will be extended until you complete a three-consecutive month period without violation. Violations are defined in 7 CSR 60-2.010 (refer to "violations reset" language).

For information regarding the IID requirement, visit the Ignition Interlock Device (IID) page of our website.

How many points go on my record when I get a ticket?

What will happen if I get a ticket in another state or on federal property (such as a U.S. military base)?

If our staff receives notification of a Missouri driver receiving a conviction for a point-assessable traffic violation in another state or on federal property (such as a U.S. military base), our staff will post the ticket to that person's Missouri driver record. The point value is determined by the violation conviction code.

And if a driver from another state receives a conviction for a point-assessable traffic violation in Missouri, a new driver record will be created to record the violation if no Missouri driver record exists for that person. The Missouri conviction information will then be forwarded to the driver licensing agency in that person's home state for any necessary processing.

How many points do I have on my record?

Please call 573-526-2407 to find out how many points you have on your record or send an email to dlbmail@dor.mo.gov.

When can tickets be removed from my record?

Ticket convictions may be removed from a Missouri driving record three years after the conviction of the ticket. However, if the conviction resulted in a suspension/revocation of your Missouri driving privileges due to the accumulation of points, then the ticket can be purged five years from the reinstatement date of the suspension/revocation. These conditions do not apply for all convictions and timeframes vary depending on class of license.

How can I request an old ticket be removed from my record?

You may submit a request (including your full name and Missouri driver license number or social security number) to have old tickets purged from your record using one of the following methods:

NOTE: A ticket is not eligible to be removed if it "supports" an existing administrative suspension/revocation/denial action against the driver, or if it otherwise must remain on the record in accordance with state law.

Where can I find information regarding a Driver Improvement Program (DIP) to reduce the points for a ticket?

In certain cases, the court or the Fine Collections Center may authorize you to complete a Driver Improvement Program (DIP) in order to reduce the points on your driver record for a ticket.
